What is this course about?
The one year course is designed to enable you to write and speak with greater competence and confidence. You will have a real opportunity to improve a previous grade.

What topics will I study?

You will learn how to respond to a variety of types of writing, and understand better how language works. There will also be a literature component. The exam at the end of the course will test all these areas. In addition there will be some coursework which will include a response to Shakespeare and oral assessment.

Last but not least, some marks will be awarded for good handwriting, spelling and presentation - very important!

How will my work be assessed?

Terminal Examination 60%
Coursework 40% (20% Oral)

Frequently asked questions

What are lessons like?
Students will be given practice in improving written skills and in understanding how language is used both orally and in writing. They will deal with a range of materials, for example, from newspapers, magazines and advertising, and will read, discuss and write about some literature, which will include their response to Shakespeare. Oral contributions will be important - we try especially to help the less confident student.

What do people do with GCSE English?
Many Further Education courses and employers require a minimum standard (often equivalent to grade C) in English at GCSE level.

Are there any special entry requirements?
Normally you will be expected to have achieved a grade D if you have taken the examination before.

GCSE Courses at London Millennium College

GCSE courses are completed in 2 and half terms and can be taken alongside other qualifications such as AS/A levels, AVCE's GNVQ's and BTEC qualifications.

Some GCSE subjects are essential for certain careers and you should always check out whether you have the necessary GCSE subjects at grades C and above for particular career routes that interest you.

Normally we expect you to have achieved a grade D in a subject previously taken at GCSE level at school if you are to have a realistic chance of success on a GCSE course at the College. However in the case of starting a language from scratch, such as Spanish or Italian it is not necessary to have attempted the subject before as long as you are competent in modern foreign languages.

There are sensible alternatives to GCSE qualifications, such as NVQ language units and Key Skills qualifications in Application of Number and Communication and the best route for you will be discussed at enrolment.
