Psychology is the study of mental events and behaviour and is based on scientific principles. It is mainly concerned with the study and analysis of human behaviour, it also covers some issues relating to the behaviour of animals.

The ICM Certificate in Psychology provides an introduction to the study of psychology and covers a broad range of topics. The ICM Diploma in Psychology is designed to follow on from the Certificate level, using material from the Certificate as the foundation for further learning, understanding and basic research techniques.

Programme Objectives

An understanding of psychology is essential for those wishing to pursue a career in the public sector, particularly if they wish to work with people in the caring professions, for example – in education, social services, police and legal work, nursing and those professions supplementary to medicine. Knowledge of psychology and human behaviour is also of great value to those seeking careers in management, commerce and the media.

Psychology is a valuable subject with relevance to everyday life. It covers not only internal mental events (cognitive and biopsychology), but also the complex ways in which people interact with one another and why they might behave in a particular way (social psychology). Developmental psychology is relevant to a good understanding of children and the development of their behaviour and ways of thinking. Studying mental health is relevant to keeping mentally healthy as well as dealing with some mental health problems (psychopathology) and understanding some of their treatments

Recommended Course Duration

Six months of full-time study for the Certificate in Psychology and one year of full-time study for the Diploma in Psychology. All studies should be undertaken at an ICM Approved Centre

Status of Qualification

Professional Vocational Diploma. The Certificate and Diploma courses both require work of a good academic standard which is about that of GCE Advanced Level. Not only are students required to develop a sound knowledge base, but they should also develop useful skills in thinking and problem solving, enhancing memory, debating controversial issues, and carrying out small-scale ethical research. Note that a coursework project is required in the Diploma course; this will necessitate the use of statistical techniques and good logical and numerical skills are therefore important.

Entry Requirements

The Institute operates an 'Open Entry' policy in respect of many of its vocational programmes but prospective students should note that the following entrance qualifications are recommended:
The ICM Business Studies Group Certificate
The ICM Certificate in Commercial Studies
